Step outside the Gallery to see and create artworks.

Step outside the gallery to see and create artworks. Local sculptor Greer Taylor will lead you on a walk and talk beginning at Barnett Newman’s Broken Obelisk then traveling to Greer’s sculpture phases. What ideas and questions do these public sculptures raise? Explore the concept of creating ephemeral public artworks using your body and cloth.

After discussing the role of art outside, in public, in relation to a monumental and world famous work Broken Obelisk and then in relation to a not so monumental and not so famous work phases we will discuss what art outside means and how it responds to us and our bodies. Public art is very often intended to be long term but some projects are short term – a few days or a matter of months… but today we will explore public art that is ephemeral… art in public places that only lives for a short time. We will be using stretchy fabric and our bodies to pull and push shapes into existence in relationship to others and the environment. We will take turns to document the shapes that appear using our mobile cameras and perhaps in that role we will even curate the movements to suit that personal viewpoint. What you will take away will be the images, the memories and the relationship that our bodies experienced making art outside. We can also discuss how this idea can infiltrate into our lives.

Cost: $40 per workshop plus booking fee
