"People connect with art that speaks honestly about lived experiences... I loved spending time with these young locals, they were great listeners, enthusiast and totally ready and interested in recreating ideas around being racially profiled as dangerous, troublesome criminals. Learning to have a voice through art is a fun way to find empowerment - well done to all those involved with Koori Kids After School program" Karla Dickens

Koori Kids Art After School is a First Nations led programming initiative for high school students to inspire participation in, and engagement with, the arts. The project began with a workshop led by Karla Dickens that coincided with her solo exhibition at Shoalhaven Regional Gallery, Resist the System, and has been supported by Allen Bloxsome, Jaz Corr and Warwick Keen. Participants make art, share food and have a chat in a culturally safe space. Students are working on their own artworks for an exhibition that opens at Shoalhaven Regional Gallery on August 23. This project was made possible for an Audience Development grant from Museums & Galleries of NSW.
